About the SS Explorer – Leith, Edinburgh 

  • SS Explorer No 26 on the register of National Historic Ships - is the last steam-powered Fishery Research vessel built in Scotland.
    Launched in 1955, SS Explorer served for nearly 30 years studying fish stocks and fishing equipment, while carrying out hydrographic and hydrobiological surveys across the Northern seas. 

  • SS Explorer is moored in the Edinburgh Dock in the historic Port of Leith in Edinburgh. ///begin.full.tricky

  • Guided tours of the SS Explorer must be booked in advance and are available on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays between 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM

    Booking is required – Email tours@theexplorer.scot or visit theexplorer.scot/book-a-tour to request a slot.

  • You’ll explore various parts of the ship, hear stories about its scientific missions, and learn about ongoing restoration efforts from passionate volunteers. The tour lasts around 45 minutes to 1 hour.

  • Tours are offered free of charge, though donations of £10 per person are suggested to support restoration and maintenance of the vessel. 

  • We take visitor safety seriously. Tours are supervised and conducted only in areas deemed safe.

    Please note that due to the ship’s structure, tours are not suitable for those with mobility issues. In addition, Port security rules restrict access for under 16’s.

  • We’re always looking for volunteers! Whether you’re handy with tools, love history, get excited by book-keeping or just enjoy meeting people, we’d welcome your help. Learn more and apply on our Become a Volunteer page.

  • No experience is necessary. We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and provide support and training where needed.

  • Our volunteers help with:

    • Vessel Maintenance and restoration  

    • Archiving and documenting history 

    • Assisting with tours and events and keeping the vessel tidy 

    • Admin, social media, and outreach 

    • Acting as Trustees
