<image:caption>6 December may have been a little early for Christmas but that was the most suitable date for all our volunteers who enjoyed dinner on board the vessel. Thanks to all those who did the organising – in particular Jim for preparing the Christmas dinner – and to everyone for coming along to enjoy the party, which reportedly continued at a local pub later.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Newsletter - February 2026 - SS Explorer’s Community Outreach Worker at the UK Maritime Heritage Forum by Beatriz Crespo Gonzalez</image:title>
<image:caption>I was delighted to attend this year’s UK Maritime Heritage Forum representing the SS Explorer Preservation Society as the Community Outreach Worker. The Forum was not only a great opportunity to connect with other vessels and museums from around the UK but also learn and discuss with experts in various areas of maritime heritage. This year the forum was hosted by National Museums Scotland, which cares for over 12 million objects and specimens in four museums and the National Museums Collection Centre. Attendees also had the option to choose between two different study visits, Royal Yacht Britannia or Trinity House Leith, with the conference dinner hosted onboard floating luxury hotel Fingal.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Presentations and posters covered new and emerging challenges in maritime heritage, such as “sea blindness” and its effects, and the loss of heritage and traditional skills. It was inspiring to hear from other Scottish ships and neighbours of Explorer, including Discovery and Unicorn from Dundee and Glenlee from Glasgow. The Forum was a great opportunity to introduce the SS Explorer to those that had not heard of her before, and hopefully the Society will be able to attend again next year to continue learning and connecting the wider maritime heritage in the UK. Please check out our social media channels for more pictures and updates on the SS Explorer!</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Newsletter - August 2025 - The SS Explorer volunteer team visit The Tall Ship Glenlee</image:title>
<image:caption>In July 2025, our volunteering team was invited to visit The Tall Ship Glenlee and meet with some of their volunteers. Leaving our beloved SS Explorer behind, volunteers got to enjoy a day out visiting the only steel square-rigged cargo vessel remaining in the whole of the UK. Lauren guided us around the ship, sharing her story as British Cargo Vessel, an Italian ship of mystery, the sail training icon of the Spanish Navy and finally back home to Glasgow, Scotland. Our volunteers were impressed by the work by the Clyde Maritime Trust in restoring Glenlee, and found their many stories of overcoming obstacles in their efforts inspiring. The Glenlee exists now as a floating museum, in a similar fashion to our end goal for the SS Explorer. Our visit also included a chat with some of the people working with the Tall Ship Glenlee Trust to keep her afloat and a testament to Clyde shipbuilding. Our volunteers had many questions regarding their learning and outreach projects, as well as wanting to discuss social media accounts and plans for the future. Like Explorer, Glenlee will need drydocking soon, and are likewise working towards securing that funding. From one team obsessed with their unique and aging vessel to another, thank you Glenlee for your warm welcome and inspiring words! We hope to return the favour and invite their team to visit our Old Lady of Leith soon. Check our socials for more pictures and videos of the day!</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - Newsletter - August 2025 - Community Outreach Projects</image:title>
<image:caption>With funding from the Community Fund, we have appointed a part-time Outreach worker for the summer months to develop our links with local and national community groups and other charities. Recently, this included the Leith Men´s Shed, who visited Explorer in August. Explorer can only host 10 visitors at a time, so they requested 2 tours to accommodate as many of their members as possible. After the tour, visitors enjoyed a cup of coffee in the saloon and many conversations were had about Leith´s history, with many sharing stories and memories. Some members then expressed interest in visiting again and even volunteering with us.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - Newsletter - August 2025</image:title>
<image:caption>In an effort to share Explorer´s beauty and history with more members of our community, we are developing a mobile version, a “roadshow” of sorts. The Explorer Roadshow will enable our volunteers to share her history and a small selection of objects with groups who may not be able to access the ship due to mobility or other accessibility limitations. Keep an eye on our newsletter for further updates! We are also working to develop links with local organisations in the ports where Explorer called during regular voyages – this includes many in the Faroes and also in Denmark and Norway as well as the Scottish mainland and islands. In addition, we are starting a project with other Leith organisations to develop a Maritime Trail in Leith and North Edinburgh which reflects the area’s long maritime history.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - Newsletter - August 2025 - Waist Deck Restoration</image:title>
<image:caption>Since the beginning of work in the second half of last year, the restoration team has made significant headway on the starboard waist deck. Almost all of the old wooden decking—badly decayed and contributing to corrosion of the underlying steel—has now been carefully removed. This step was guided by a heritage impact assessment, which confirmed that removal was necessary to protect the vessel’s long-term integrity. The deck restoration team has grown considerably in recent months, bringing fresh energy and momentum. A second-hand industrial deck scaler was also acquired and fully refurbished, including the installation of a brand-new motor. In addition to the deck scaler, needle guns are used to tackle more intricate and hard-to-reach areas where heavy machinery isn’t suitable. The angle grinders were hard at work, gleefully chewing through leftover studs, upstands, and anything else that posed a trip hazard after the deck came up. These developments have allowed us to make strong progress in removing thick layers of rust scale and preparing the steel surface beneath. With much of the groundwork complete, repainting is planned to begin towards the end of this summer.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Newsletter - August 2024 - Adventures on the RRS Discovery: Navigating the Challenges and Wonders of Oceanic Research</image:title>
<image:caption>Marta Maria Cecchetto who joined us as a Trustee last year is a Postdoctoral Associate at The Lyell Centre for Earth and Marine Science and Technology at Heriot-Watt University. She has written a short report about her most recent survey trip – which sounds very similar to the Explorer trips from many years ago: Who hasn't at least once thought about giving up everything and going to live on a boat in the middle of the sea? Let me tell you, it’s not as simple as it sounds. This is my job. Every so often, I leave everything behind and spend months at a time in the middle of the ocean for fieldwork. Even though it’s hard work, you get to live through unique experiences—some good, some bad. Sunsets and sunrises are breathtaking, but seasickness is a real challenge, and there’s nowhere to escape! My most recent adventure was aboard the British ship RRS Discovery, hunting for “white waters” in the Iceland Basin of the North Atlantic. “White waters” are areas so rich in coccolithophores—tiny planktonic organisms that produce calcium carbonate shells (similar to corals)—that the water appears a very light blue.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - Newsletter - August 2024</image:title>
<image:caption>Living on a ship for extended periods has its perks, like no cooking or cleaning for a month! But it’s also incredibly demanding work. Shifts usually last 12 hours on and 12 hours off. During these hours, we collected an extensive amount of water samples using a CTD (conductivity, temperature, and depth profiler). Once ashore, these samples are subjected to detailed analysis for various parameters, including nutrient concentrations, oxygen levels, and other vital indicators of ocean health. Nutrients like nitrate, phosphate, and silicate are crucial for understanding the biological productivity of the ocean, while oxygen measurements help us track changes in water masses and their potential impacts on marine life.</image:caption>

We are extremely grateful for this support and hope that it will encourage Britannia’s visitors to support another historic vessel in the Port of Leith. Thanks also to Colin Williamson and Charlie Blyth for their work in setting up the donation point and, of course, to Bill Macpherson for the design and layout of the information Board. <image:title>Blog - Braving the Storm: The SS Explorer’s Battle with the North Atlantic - In the early 70’s, on returning from a voyage in Icelandic waters, the Explorer encountered severe storm conditions. While heading into the storm, a large sea broke over the bow and a lump of green water struck the casing with such force, that it stove in the bridge front, breaking all the windows and flooding the wheelhouse.</image:title>

Our volunteers were impressed by the work by the Clyde Maritime Trust in restoring Glenlee, and found their many stories of overcoming obstacles in their efforts inspiring. <image:caption>Our visit also included a chat with some of the people working with the Tall Ship Glenlee Trust to keep her afloat and a testament to Clyde shipbuilding.
